David Neale was born in Bendigo and grew up in the Goldfields region. Gold is in his blood, and he began making jewellery at age 15. He went on to study Goldsmithing at Rmit University. His work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Victoria, Queensland Art Gallery and others. Neale is fascinated by ancient metalwork artefacts, noting that limited technologies need not limit the expressive potential of metalwork. This observation leads him to keep any making processes as simple as possible. His jewellery designs emphasise hand worked surfaces and often involve the use of stone tools. Neale thinks about the question 'what does jewellery do?' - and hopes it can do something good.
