Katherine Hubble — 'Out of your shell #I', Wall Light, 2024

$880

Out of your shell is a series of five iridescent ultraviolet lights inspired by hermit crab habitats and fish aquariums. Ultraviolet lighting is essential in aquariums to prevent vitamin deficiency and kill unwanted parasites and bacteria. This series reimagines standard aquarium lighting design and instead takes inspiration from natural rockpool habitats to both add to the aquarium-scape and provide a vital source of ultraviolet light. Each light is made through vacuum forming – an industrial manufacturing method where plastic sheets are heated to a pliable temperature and moulded over a specific form – in this case, sourced abalone shells from Western Australia.

Katherine Hubble is a contemporary art jeweller investigating new ways of looking at traditional forms. She creates wearable pieces using contemporary plastics, industrial processes and traditional gold and silversmithing techniques. Drawing upon research into historical jewellery motifs and the cultural significance of body ornamentation, she re-imagines conventional pearl jewellery through synthetic materials to question what is considered prized or treasurable. Katherine holds a Master of Fine Art by research and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from RMIT. On multiple occasions she has been selected to exhibition at the Marzee International Graduate Show in Nijmegen, The Netherlands and in 2023 she was invited to exhibit at the ITAMI International Jewellery Exhibition.
