Clumsy — 'Fit for a King!' Throne, 2024

The classic taverna chair, strewn across sidewalks, cafes and underground bars are an inescapable fixture of the Mediterranean lifestyle. Its traditional design has transcended its utility, now representing stories, immigration, meals shared, and friends gathered.

"I wish to continue this evolution by inviting our pets to relish in the remarkable taverna chair for themselves. The imposing size might suggest it has outgrown us, but maybe we will find new uses for the chairs once we see it from a puppy’s point of view.” – Monique Chiari

Monique Chiari is an artist and arts worker based on Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country. She is the founder of the textile brand Clumsy. With a focus in homewares, Clumsy allows Monique a means of creative expression in art direction and styling, alternative acoustic insulation, music management and community building. Committed to sustainable making practices, each Clumsy object is handcrafted using a combination of recycled water bottle fibres, offcuts collected from local makers, and deadstock natural fabrics. In reflection of the brand name, the objects are imperfect and wobbly. Her pieces offer whimsical solutions to conventional offerings in the home. Monique completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at RMIT in 2018, specialising in drawing.
