DNJ Paper

DNJ Paper- 'Diatom', 2023

$2,200

One of five collectible paper coats. Diatom was produced using hand-made Japanese washi paper containing diatomaceous earth. The coat is lined with vintage wool and silk kimono fabric, and the interior pocket is lined with beads.

This is a very unique paper, which is absorbant due to the diatomaceous earth content. Diatoms are the fossilised bodies of tiny, ancient marine creatures such as plankton. They can be found in the clay of certain regions, including Wajima.

This clay is so abundant there that it is used for making clay pots and other craft products. The microscopic skeletons make the paper light, fuzzy, chalky, fluffy, and absorbent. When waxed, this paper completely changes state; it takes on a stone-like quality and turns brown.

This coat is extremely delicate and is untreated with any strengtheners.

DNJ PAPER is a collaborative research project and fashion brand. Designers Daphne Mohajer va Pesaran and Jake Nakashima-Edwards use handmade Japanese paper (washi), made from the bark of the Paper Mulberry tree (Broussonetia Papyrifera) in small studios across Japan, to wearable items.

The designers use washi in traditional and nontraditional ways of making paper clothing in response to pressing social, aesthetic and conceptual questions emerging from contemporary fashion practice. These pieces are never "finished" and will change over time – let them wear, then be repaired.

DNJ PAPER was awarded the 2023 Uniform Commission for MPavillion 10, and exhibited at Australian Tapestry Workshop in 2023.
