Remy Faint
Remy Faint – 'Inscribed Finial with Banner' Series I-V (artefact), 2023
Inscribed Finials with Banners expands upon Remy’s interests in sculptural devices and distinctions between unconventional materialities of painting. The work iterates architectural mouldings in the form of terracotta roof finials. These two-dimensional profiles are mediated with illustrative engravings. These compositions reimagine depictions of mythology, nature, interior and exterior spaces across times and regions.
The ceramic forms, positioned at an elevated linear configuration, act as anchors for a series of hanging painterly banners. These assembled and repurposed paintings, evoke visual cues reminiscent of imagined topographies and perceptions of physical barriers such as passages and windows. Distinctions between various materials such as silk, oil paint, canvas, shade cloth and twine are similarly blurred and destabilised. It is precisely these traces, remnants, concealments and obscurations left by Remy's painterly and sculptural gestures that elude to any fixed representation (of a culture, composition, method) to point towards more fluid modes of being.
Each work is sold and priced individually.
