DNJ Paper – 'Leaf', 2023
One of five collectible paper coats. Leaf was produced using hand-made Japanese washi paper, and hand-dyed with eucalyptus using a shibori technique with over 250 hand-tied nodes. The coat is lined with antique indigo-dyed kimono silk backed with linen.
There are hundreds of different kinds of shibori, or tie-dyeing techniques used in Japan, with many of them originating from Jake’s family hometown of Arimatsu, in Aichi Prefecture. Jake has been researching his family’s own techniques, which date back many generations.
Mino has a long history of papermaking stretching back to roughly the year 702 CE. Though there were 5,000 workshops in the early 20th century, 19 currently remain. The Warabi Paper Company was started in 2011, in the household of a retired papermaker. They specialize in rakusui-shi, a paper patterned by falling droplets of water.

DNJ PAPER is a collaborative research project and fashion brand. Designers Daphne Mohajer va Pesaran and Jake Nakashima-Edwards use handmade Japanese paper (washi), made from the bark of the Paper Mulberry tree (Broussonetia Papyrifera) in small studios across Japan, to wearable items.
The designers use washi in traditional and nontraditional ways of making paper clothing in response to pressing social, aesthetic and conceptual questions emerging from contemporary fashion practice. These pieces are never "finished" and will change over time – let them wear, then be repaired.
DNJ PAPER was awarded the 2023 Uniform Commission for MPavillion 10, and exhibited at Australian Tapestry Workshop in 2023.
