DNJ Paper – 'Lace', 2023
One of five collectible paper coats. Lace has been constructed as a silk jacket with lace paper hand-stitched on top. This paper is not typically used as cloth, so a couture technique of connecting lace was used to produce a delicate lace coat. The silk under layer reveals the pink hand-dyed hem of a repurposed kimono.
Mino has a long history of papermaking stretching back to roughly the year 702 CE. Though there were 5,000 workshops in the early 20th century, 19 currently remain. The Warabi Paper Company was started in 2011, in the household of a retired papermaker. They specialize in rakusui-shi, a paper patterned by falling droplets of water.
This coat is extremely delicate and is untreated with any strengtheners.

DNJ PAPER is a collaborative research project and fashion brand. Designers Daphne Mohajer va Pesaran and Jake Nakashima-Edwards use handmade Japanese paper (washi), made from the bark of the Paper Mulberry tree (Broussonetia Papyrifera) in small studios across Japan, to wearable items.
The designers use washi in traditional and nontraditional ways of making paper clothing in response to pressing social, aesthetic and conceptual questions emerging from contemporary fashion practice. These pieces are never "finished" and will change over time – let them wear, then be repaired.
DNJ PAPER was awarded the 2023 Uniform Commission for MPavillion 10, and exhibited at Australian Tapestry Workshop in 2023.
