Wendy Jagger — 'Resilient Embrace', 2023

$880
Resilient Embrace is inspired by a rock's geology, the timelessness of our land, its presence and resilience, its wonder, its witness to so much beyond each of us, and its comforting embrace of strength. This piece embraced me with resilient strength during a difficult time in my life.

Inspired by the weathered granite rocks of the High Country where I live, this wheel-thrown raku clay vessel has been scraped to reveal its gritty texture. The rock-like surface has been decorated in a painterly manner with slips and underglazes, its interior glazed with an oilspot glaze reminiscent of caverns and safe havens from storms. Much as the making of this piece sheltered me emotionally.

Wendy Jagger's studio looks directly to Mt Buller in northeast Victoria. Her paintings and ceramics are strongly influenced by seasonal changes in the landscape and the diversity of native Australian flora.
Wendy's work begins in the field, painting en plein air, capturing the natural world's raw beauty and ephemeral qualities.

Her studies develop into larger, more considered compositions on canvas and clay. Using slips, stains, and underglazes, her expressive, painterly mark-making responds to the colours, textures, and forms of the landscapes she has experienced. The thrown vessels become her canvas.

A finalist in numerous national and international art prizes, Wendy's awarded work is held in private and public collections, including Bendigo Art Gallery, Manningham Gallery, and Holmesglen TAFE Collection. She has completed commissioned pieces for clients such as the NGV, the Victorian State Parliament, Mazda Australia, and the Steph Alexander Foundation.
