Tai Snaith’s recent work explores the idea of seeking signs and small affirmations from the universe when making decisions. These playful creatures act as affirmative mascots, offering gentle encouragement and reassurance. Constructed from a collection of found vessels, including beer steins sourced from garage sales and milk jugs discovered in op shops, each work incorporates pivots made from repurposed knitting needles and paintbrushes.
Topped with peaceful porcelain and stoneware heads featuring glossy glazed noses, the sculptures are designed for interaction. With the slightest push, they begin to nod, coming to life as quiet companions that offer a simple, affirmative gesture. Through humour, movement, and the transformation of everyday objects, Snaith creates works that invite moments of reflection, optimism, and connection.

Living and working in Naarm, Melbourne, Tai's work often investigates the nature of visual storytelling and play. Symbols and motifs of her personal mythology permeate all aspects of her work.
Her practice spans a broad range of mediums, including ceramic sculpture, oil painting, spoken conversations and large public realm commissions. Tai has also written and illustrated 7 picture books published by Thames and Hudson Australia, and a significant part of her work is reading to and running workshops with children and young adults. Tai has artwork held in numerous private and public collections, including Artbank, The NGA, State Library of Victoria, Bayside, Banyule, ACU and SAM. Tai will be presenting a large site-specific wall drawing as part of the upcoming NGV Triennial in December 2026.

Shelley Simpson Ceramics Prize 2026

Following the success of last year's prize, Craft is delighted to continue our partnership with Mud Australia to present the Shelley Simpson Ceramics Prize 2026.
The Shelley Simpson Ceramics Prize (SSCP) was established in 2020 by Mud Australia Founder and Creative Director, Shelley Simpson, to support and champion the next generation of Australian ceramicists.
Presented in partnership with Craft Victoria, the annual prize is open to ceramic artists working across functional ware, fine art, handcrafted objects and broader commercial ceramic practices. Alongside a $10,000 cash prize, shortlisted finalists will be exhibited at Craft Victoria as part of a dedicated exhibition celebrating contemporary Australian ceramics.
