Ruth Allen — 'Luscious Lip' Vase in Olive
The Luscious Lip Vase is meticulously crafted, voluptuous and bold. With four gathers of material on top of a palette of primary and autumnal hues, they are hand blown into a large sphere. Using corks, the large bubble is squashed flat, then transferred onto a solid rod so the team can focus on the lips.
Thick and seductive, the lips are flicked and rolled over. Using specially made shaping tools, Ruth gestures the lips to perfect the fold, boasting an impressive profile. The team uses centrifugal force to spin out the shoulder, and gravity for elongation into the perfect final form.

Ruth Allen is an acclaimed glass artist with a career spanning more than 35 years. She predominantly focuses on installation, sculpture, performance, design, and education. Her work explores elemental materials and phenomenological experience. Alongside being shortlisted for major awards including the Tom Malone, INDE, Waterhouse, and Clarence Prizes, Ruth provides artist fabrication services and collaborates with industry leaders across art, design and architecture – integrating cutting-edge, contemporary craftsmanship across multiple sectors. Ruth is the Director of r.a.g.e, an independent hot glass studio in Coburg North, Victoria. Alongside her team, she is establishing The Glass Epicentre – Victoria’s first independent, purpose-built, community glassmaking facility, safeguarding the cultural legacy of glass art.
