Remy Pajaczkowski-Russell — 'Ochre Drip' Ceramic Side Table, 2025
This work from Remy Pajaczkowski-Russell forms part of a body of work exploring ceramic materials as the mechanism to create unique and bespoke furniture.
In this piece I aim synthesise traditional ceramic practices with the sensibility and ambition of contemporary design. I've tried to reimagine how we view ceramic as a material for tiling and domestic ware and transform it into a piece of furniture.
This side table is made on the wheel, before being fired and finished in multiple layers of glaze made from recycled woodash and ochre. Central to my practice is sustainability, and I regularly reuse materials destined for landfill in my glaze and clay making.
Ochre Drip is the result of years of experimentation and play in the studio, exploring how we interpret ceramics in the domestic space as well as how far these materials can be pushed.

Remy is an artist working on Gadigal land. His practice spans craft, art and design but is centered around material exploration as a way to explore contemporary object making and its relationship to human histories and practices.
After an introduction to ceramics at the National Art School, Remy then completed an apprenticeship in a traditional French potters village, before going on to work in Barcelona at a world leading ceramic design studio.
Currently, Remy produces domestic ware, furniture and sculpture that recycle waste materials from found his urban surroundings. He works in large scale installation of ceramic objects to invite reflection and a pause from everyday life. Remy firmly believes in the power of the material nature of ceramics to imbue normal spaces with a powerful and introspective energy.

Shelley Simpson Ceramics Prize 2026

Following the success of last year's prize, Craft is delighted to continue our partnership with Mud Australia to present the Shelley Simpson Ceramics Prize 2026.
The Shelley Simpson Ceramics Prize (SSCP) was established in 2020 by Mud Australia Founder and Creative Director, Shelley Simpson, to support and champion the next generation of Australian ceramicists.
Presented in partnership with Craft Victoria, the annual prize is open to ceramic artists working across functional ware, fine art, handcrafted objects and broader commercial ceramic practices. Alongside a $10,000 cash prize, shortlisted finalists will be exhibited at Craft Victoria as part of a dedicated exhibition celebrating contemporary Australian ceramics.
