Raphy — 'Close Up!' Mosaic, 2026
‘Close Up!’ Was created using handmade stoneware tiles that were designed to mimic natural marble and stone. Each colour and tone was created by slip casting tiles and then cutting them into tesserae (small tiles). The piece is in Roman style, with flowing lines of tesserae called andamento. This is an ancient practice with rules and techniques that have remained unchanged for millennia.

Raphy is a ceramic artist and mosaicist from Melbourne Australia who combines ancient craft with contemporary storytelling. Using stone and clay, he records modern life while drawing deep inspiration from his own heritage.
Through his research, he has developed a custom slip-casting method for ceramic tesserae and established one of the only specialised studios of its kind in Australia.

Shelley Simpson Ceramics Prize 2026

Following the success of last year's prize, Craft is delighted to continue our partnership with Mud Australia to present the Shelley Simpson Ceramics Prize 2026.
The Shelley Simpson Ceramics Prize (SSCP) was established in 2020 by Mud Australia Founder and Creative Director, Shelley Simpson, to support and champion the next generation of Australian ceramicists.
Presented in partnership with Craft Victoria, the annual prize is open to ceramic artists working across functional ware, fine art, handcrafted objects and broader commercial ceramic practices. Alongside a $10,000 cash prize, shortlisted finalists will be exhibited at Craft Victoria as part of a dedicated exhibition celebrating contemporary Australian ceramics.
