Polly Dymond – 'Fools Pearls', Neckpiece (Akoya), 2023

$920
"I have a phobic relationship with waste, above all, disposable and single use plastics. The pattern of relentless industrialization and production has led to a collective endemic of thoughtless reliance and environmental catastrophe."

Utilising street salvaged discarded polystyrene, combined with ancient metalsmithing techniques, Dymond reimagines waste to elevate materials so often overlooked. Through the laborious process of electroforming Dymond entombs the material beneath layers of hard copper amour. The result is seemingly weighty but light, recognisable yet foreign, once discarded now precious.

Explorations combining non precious second hand glass and plastic 'gemstones' with electroformed plastics have a dual interrogation. To challenge the perceptions of value associated with 'real' gemstones and hierarchy of preciousness embedded in traditional jewellery for millennia and aim to highlight the largely unsustainable and unethical mining practices used to procure these finite resources.

Polly Dymond is an emerging contemporary jeweller and object maker embracing the alchemy of experimental materials and processes to transform discarded waste into precious artefacts. Raised in Naarm/Melbourne, she studied an Advanced Diploma of Jewellery and Object Design at Melbourne Polytechnic before relocating to Tarntanya/Adelaide to undertake the esteemed JamFactory Associate program in the Jewellery and Metal Studio.

A recipient of the NMH Metalworks Prize for Silversmithing and finalist in Australia's Next Top Designer, DIA GOTYA Awards, Contemporary Wearables Biennial Jewellery Award, Profile Contemporary Jewellery and Object Award and the National Contemporary Jewellery Award she has exhibited across Australia in galleries such as JamFactory, Brunswick Street Gallery, Craft ACT and Zu Design and has been the recipient of project grants from Australia Council for the Arts, ArtsSA and JamFactory Medici Collective.
