Lucinda Johnson-Cornes
Lucinda Johnson-Cornes — 'We Know We Must Move I', 2024
$350
This series of developmental works represents the ongoing evolution of Johnson-Cornes’ graduating project, We know we must move (2024). Each piece explores the use of hand-applied rust-dying techniques, free-motion sewing, and varying fabric opacities, all of which inform the draping and movement of the works once suspended.
Johnson-Cornes’ commitment to process-driven practices stems from a deep desire to convey stories, memories and personal reflections on her cultural heritage. Techniques such as hand-dying crepe paper, and rust-dyeing with objects, reflect her ongoing desire to connect with the land. The rust hues evoke the desert landscapes of her heritage, reinforcing her bond with the country.
Each piece is completed with intuitive hand-sewing, which weaves together a metaphorical map - representing what was, what could have been, and what will always endure. This process highlights the artist’s deep understanding of the vital connection between creating art and personal storytelling.
