Lilach Mileikowski — 'The Congregation' Sculpture, 2022

$2,400
Within this artwork fused in clay, glaze and fabric, sits the delicate scrolls of Hebrew script, marking the sacred prayer, Shema-Israel. This prayer is traditionally recited at morning, evening and at the passing of a life.

Clay vessels are emblems of our primal needs, as containers for carrying water or food. In this context, they are also suggestive of human figures, wrapped in a traditional garment, gathering as one in a ceremonial congregation. Reiterated and bonded they reflect on the basic human need to connect, representing the power of prayer to unite. The singular is supported by the whole and the whole is united by the singular. The congregation conveys a fusion of many disparate elements, clay to fabric, nature to man-made, past to present, frozen moment to eternity. Potent yet delicate it reflects on the meditative energy of a prayer and its capacity to support life’s ever-changing dynamics, comforting grief and celebrating joy.
