Canaan is the biblical name drawn out of an archaeological finding, recording that the Israelites origin was within the land of Canaan.
The In Canaanite Land series, illustrates an imaginative fictional tale from the time of the ancient. A nostalgic journey or a reimagining of an ancient landscape. Aiming to imitate an archaeological finding or an artifact dug from the ground, I employ various techniques such as multiple firings, textured clay, and layered glaze materials. Playful and whimsical these forms are often characterised by 3 legs. The three-legged symbol known as triskelion has been used in various cultures and historical contexts often representing concepts such as motion, progress, and interconnectedness of past, present, and future. In this work, they also become the carriers of a family, migration, and cultural integration. A space in between, where history becomes fictional and ancient becomes contemporary.

Lilach Mileikowski is a ceramic artist based in Melbourne, Australia. Originally from Israel with a background in graphic design, Lilach migrated to Melbourne in 1995, completed a Diploma of Arts Ceramics, followed by an Advanced Diploma of Creative Product Development. In 2016, she completed a Master of Fine Art at RMIT University, her research focusing on the spiritual and political concerns of identity exploring the dual notions of fragility and strength. Lilach’s work is held in private collections and has been a finalist for prestigious exhibitions in Australia and internationally, including The International Ceramic Competition Mino Japan, The Gold Coast International Ceramic Art Award, The Victorian Ceramic Art Award, The Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize and The Lake Macquarie Art Prize. Most recently, her work was celebrated in a solo show, SUSTENANCE, selected for The Yering Station Sculpture Exhibition, The Australian Ceramics Association Exhibition HELD and The North Queensland Ceramic Awards.
