Jonathan Ben-Tovim — 'Echo of the Bunyip' Sculpture, 2024
Echo of the Bunyip is a collaborative work shaped by a structured process between artist and AI. Given a set of parameters, the AI was directed to explore folklore as a theme, selecting narratives from various cultures and eventually focusing on the Australian fable of the bunyip—a mythic creature of the water, embodying both the unknown and the untamed aspects of the natural world. Echo of the Bunyip explores a deeper question: whether humanity has created, or perhaps even replicated, something akin to sentience within artificial intelligence. This piece considers the concept that AI might evolve to exceed human capabilities in creativity—a scenario that may seem like science fiction to us now, but which to earlier generations would have been unimaginable. In this sense, AI's potential is a modern-day fable, an unfolding story of technology on the brink of transforming itself from a tool into something more autonomous and complex. - Text created by Chat GPT
