John Budd – 'Echoes of Kin' Candle Holders Set, 2024
Lighting candles at the dinner table is a simple, enduring gesture - one that suggests warmth, hospitality, and time shared together. While these forms echo the silhouette of traditional candle holders, their geometry is shaped not by hand alone, but by voice. Each object is a visual interpretation of voice and language - they are the physical embodiment of sound.
Three generations - a mother, her son, and his daughter - each repeat a single phrase. Through repetition, it becomes mantra; through process, it becomes form. The resulting objects are infused with the cadence and character of those voices, ensuring that even in absence, they remain present - seen as well as heard.
The pieces are designed to stack. When assembled, they form a small family totem, revealing the full line:
"One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well."
- Virginia Woolf
