Numbulwar Numburindi

Janette Murrungun — 'Bush Jewellery Weaving' 334-25, Numbulwar Numburindi Arts

$350

This carefully woven piece by Janette Murrungun shows bold, bright and colourful coils which are made from a combination of abandoned fishing lines, known as ghost nets, and thoughtfully repurposed found fibres. On this unique weaving, nothing is wasted.

Ghost nets account for about 40% of all ocean plastic. Numbulwar fibre art diverts this plastic away from the oceans, keeping nets clear of vulnerable sea life. All materials are sourced locally in Numbulwar.

Janette Murrungun’s homeland is Rocky Point near Numbulwar, and she has spent most of her life in the region. Janette is the daughter of Mawungumain Nundhirribala, who taught her how to weave. Today, Janette is an experienced weaver with both pandanus and ghost net materials. She is also an expert harvester, holding deep knowledge around sourcing plants for string-making, natural dyeing and traditional weaving practices.

Janette is an artist and arts worker at Numbulwar Numburindi Arts, and a board member of Numburindi Corporation, using her position in the community to advocate the benefits of the art centre for both individual and communal wellbeing, as well as its role in transmitting significant cultural knowledge and skills to new generations.

Numbulwar Numburindi Arts x Craft

Built on self-determination, Numbulwar Numburindi Arts (NNA) is a collective of artists whose mission is to keep culture strong. Established in 2019, Numbulwar’s first art centre is 100 percent owned and controlled by the community. Born from the community’s desire to practice and engage with traditional culture, NNA is a space for artistic and cultural expression.

Numbulwar sits on the Rose River and belongs to the Nunggayinbala clan, one of the Wubuy or Nunggubuyu speaking clans from the region. Ceremonial activities are still very important within the region and occur regularly.
