Eugenie Kawabata — 'Botanica Exotica Unknown Civilisation #6' Sculptural Vessel, 2024

$2,200
Inspired by the otherworldliness of the cacti…

Cacti hold a revered place in the folklore of diverse cultures, symbolizing resilience, protection, and healing. In northern America planting cactus near the entrance of a home or village was believed to ward off malevolent forces and bring good luck to the residents. They are seen as protectors against evil spirits and negative energy.

Eugenie Kawabata is an independent, Melbourne based designer/artist and object maker working at the Abbotsford Convent. Her creative practice lies at the intersection of art and design and in the innovation of crafting objects with an emphasis on materiality and sustainability. Her work draws attention to consumption, object disposability and how we value objects. Since 2019, she has been utilising textile waste, giving rise to an ever- evolving collection of vessels in her 'Second Life' series.

In 2020, the National Gallery of Victoria acquired a piece from her first iteration of the 'Second Life' series. Her creative vision has evolved into 'Botanica Exotica' in 2023 and ‘Botanica Exotica: Unknown Civilisations’ in 2024. ‘Botanica Exotica’ was showcased at Melbourne Design Fair in 2023, most of which found a permanent home in Singapore. Kawabata’s career highlights include a solo exhibition of ‘Botanica Exotica: Unknown Civilisations’ at the Jam Factory, in Adelaide, South Australia, May-July 2024, being shortlisted from within the Indo Pacific region for the INDE Awards, in the ‘Object’ design category in 2022 and being short listed for the Alessi Design prize in 2015.
