VISIONARIES 2025:
Presenting the future of Australian art, craft and design through the lens of one of the country's most influential creatives.

Interwoven is the result of a collaborative dialogue between Space-man Studio and Sundance Studio, two distinctly different practices united by a shared utilitarian sensibility and a curiosity for material, form, and how they interact. Exploring the meeting point between structure and softness, Interwoven highlights the contrasts that, when combined, feel naturally aligned. The result is an object that celebrates both structure and softness, capturing the balance between play, function, and sculpture.

A true collaboration, created without expectation, Interwoven provided the opportunity to understand one another’s practice and process, finding connection through differing perspectives and shared intent.

Working from her Flinders (VIC) studio, weaver Emma Shepherd practices one of the world's oldest crafts with the sensibility of an artist deeply embedded in her environment.

Thinking through fabric, its strength and its structure, Shepherd has acquired an innate understanding of textiles as a universal language, and the long history of weaving as a site of innovation, intuition, and intimacy. The Bauhaus ethos remains central to Shepherd’s practice, where art, craft and design are seamlessly integrated without hierarchy.

Carefully selected yarn affords Shepherd the opportunity to reflect on the deeper lineage of fibre, allowing each material - especially those collected from sites around the studio - to shape the work in a gentle yet deliberate way. She sensitively honours the landscape within which she lives and works by periodically folding in colours resembling the verdant foliage, the dark tones of tree trunks, the neutrals of the sand and stone of her coastal hometown.

Joseph Gardner is the 2025 Visionaries curator – presenting DONE/UNDONE: an exhibition of 50+ artists, and one of Craft’s largest exhibitions to date – featuring artists working across medium, scale and practice, representing exceptional Australian talent.

DONE/UNDONE explores the creative process as a space of constant negotiation – a series of decisions to build, erase, repeat, or let be. It’s about that intuitive moment when a maker chooses to pause, to push further, or to dismantle entirely. These are the choices that define the rhythm of making – choices familiar to artists, designers, and creators across disciplines.

Joseph Gardner is the Style Editor at Vogue Living, with a decade of experience in publishing and styling, and the founder of Sydney-based gallery, Studio Gardner.
