'Chip on the Shoulder' playfully critiques societal elitism, embracing the phrase's derogatory connotations to prompt reflection on power dynamics and privilege. It challenges viewers to reconsider notions of inequality and ownership, inviting contemplation on who truly holds the upper hand in this narrative.


Emily O'Brien is a Melbourne based artist and designer working across gold and silversmithing, sculpture, installation, film and performance art. Upon graduating from the Canberra School of Art, ANU in 2006 her 'Hair Chairs' were acquired by the National Gallery of Australia. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally. Emily's artwork challenge ideas of beliefs and conformity; addressing themes of fear, trauma, anxiety, social expectations. She is primarily concerned with how these themes resonate when worn on the body and how they can empower the wearer. Emily returned to study an Advanced Diploma in Jewellery and Object Design at Melbourne Polytechnic, graduating with a Graduate Excellence award in 2024.

Jewellery has always played a significant role conveying messages about the relationships between people and the things they value – communicating across cultural, social, personal and political levels. Trove will feature a curated collection of works created by some of Australia's most forward-thinking and renowned artisans working in the field of jewellery. Exploring themes such as identity, culture, and sustainability, this exhibition will showcase works that are both visually striking and conceptually engaging.
