Em Frank

Em Frank — 'Patina II' Sculptural Cup, 2024

$120
This work forms part of Em Frank’s ongoing exploration into the visual dialogue between clay and metal - a love note to the car graveyards of the Central Desert, and the confounding material quality of decaying and patinated metal.
Over the last ten year, Frank has spent many hours treasure hunting in the burnt out engines of dead cards, the rewards of which are now a ubiquitous feature of her studio. These rusty trinkets have found their way into her ceramics practice, heavily influencing form, material and surface.

Em Frank is a multidisciplinary artist living and working across Tandanya/Adelaide and Mparntwe/Alice Sprints. At its core, Em’s practice is motivated by the use of art as a tool for collaboration and community building. She explores themes of belonging, identity, community and collective care with a significant focus on material exploration. Em’s current work draws heavily on the last ten years spend living and working in the remote Central Desert and her personal experiences of connection and loss.

Woking in ceramics as her primary medium, Em’s practice extends across drawing, painting, mixed media and assemblage. She has a bowerbird-like proclivity for collecting discarded and broken materials and an abiding compulsion to tinker and play. Lately Em has been exploring the visual and material dialogue between clay and metal, and the use of ancient techniques in a pursuit of a contemporary aesthetic.
