"In all my work, the theme of personal and cultural meaning and memory is highly important, I am interested in the making of objects but also the dialogue that arises from and through craft practice. My practice has explored ways to celebrate and raise awareness of Australia’s unique plants and animals, and to foster connections between the made object and the self. I observe, select and record my known environment always recognising the importance of natural and national themes of place, seeing, making, memory and heritage." 

"In 2007 I made an impression with pink wax, around a very large Eucalyptus in East Gippsland, and had it cast in 925 silver. It formed part of my Living Treasures, Masters of Australian Craft, exhibition at Object in Sydney and toured Nationally including at Craft Victoria. In 2021 I returned to see the old tree and in 2025 I made the Maquette Old Growth in Nickel silver. Currently living on the Mornington Peninsula I have made Coastal Old growth based on the old Moonah trees growing along the coast line between Rye and Blairgowrie. I have taken up woodturning and have made a series of watercolour paint tubes utilising the diverse timbers growing in Victorian forests." - Dr Marian Hosking

Marian Hosking is an educator, jeweller and silversmith. With the benefit of intensive practice she has developed a personal vocabulary in her work to express a specific vision and interpretation of the qualities of Australian light and landscape in the detail of botanical specimens. She uses the drill and jeweller's saw together with lost wax castings and favours the soft white sheen of silver, with its evasive highlights and shifting shadows.

She has held 16 solo exhibitions in Australia, and exhibited in Japan, Korea, India, Germany, The Netherlands, Canada, the UK and USA.

She has been an educator in her field for over thirty years, including at Monash University. She received her PhD in 2009 from Monash University, an MA and Diploma of Art: Gold and Silversmithing in 1970 from RMIT. She is committed to the promotion of and dialogue around contemporary jewellery and contemporary art practice.

Lean In

September 5 – October 31, 2026

Lean In brings together new work by three of Australia’s most innovative and established contemporary jewellers: Laura Deakin, Dr Marian Hosking and Dr Blanche Tilden. This exhibition showcases jewellery and objects created through a sustained collaboration between these makers, who have spent time working side-by-side, leaning into each other’s practices, and experimenting across studios.

Lean In is an invitation: to move closer to the work, to notice fine details and to enter the dialogue between artists. It asks audiences to lean into the conversation that unfolds when mentorship, friendship and curiosity intersect with material intelligence and generosity. At once intimate and ambitious, the exhibition celebrates how leaning in can mean listening, supporting, challenging and ultimately expanding the possibilities of contemporary jewellery practice.
