Anton Gerner — '1152' Sculptural Cabinet, 2024

$18,888.81
Sitting on that captivating threshold between art and craftsmanship, ‘1152’ by Anton Gerner is a significant piece that engages on myriad levels. First, it is a meticulously constructed cocktail cabi-net composed of Euro Ash Burl that invites closer scrutiny through the pleasing uniformity of its surface treatment. Painted white to serve as a canvas for an intricate design of 1152 ebonised Tas-manian myrtle dots, the piece takes on a hypnotic essence, morphing into a sensorial portal that hones the viewer’s focus while all else recedes into the background. The exacting execution stirs notions that there is much more here than initially meets the eye, that perhaps, a parallel world is contained within.

Anton Gerner is an award-winning furniture designer and craftsman based in Melbourne.
From a workshop that was once the local dairy, he creates one-off pieces of furniture for Australian and international clients. A modern-day Krimper, Anton has been making high-end furniture for clients since 1990, obsessively mastering the fading art of traditional joinery and wood veneer matching techniques.

Anton’s interest is in the mastery of combining traditional furniture making techniques with contemporary design, to create pieces that cross between functional furniture, design and sculpture. Anton’s work has fascinating stories to tell. Huon Pine salvaged from a lake in Tasmania, rare veneer that came from Rosando Furniture in Melbourne; his pieces range from modern Art Deco to ultra-contemporary. It is Anton’s uncompromising attention to detail and unusual use of timber combinations that sets him apart: "I am obsessed with quality. Nothing leaves my workshop until I am happy with it."- Anton Gerner
