Craft is one of the leading organisations for contemporary craft and design in Australia. Originally established as the Craft Association of Victoria in 1970, at a public meeting in July 1970 at Kay House — for over 45 years we have supported Australian craftspeople through our retail space and projects, exhibitions, public programs and membership.
From the early 1960s, what became known as the contemporary crafts movement had been developing momentum in Australia, as many sought to make objects by hand as part of a chosen way of life. As a not-for-profit body, we believe in supporting and celebrating contemporary craft practice, showcasing the best work by Australia’s leading makers and emerging talent through our exhibition program, retail spaces and project and public programming. We believe in promoting excellence and innovation at all levels and sharing our delight in skilled and extraordinary crafted work with everyone. All work showcased in our online and retail spaces is made in Australia by local makers spanning a diversity of discipline from jewellery to textiles, glass, ceramics, timber, mixed media and so on.
