Raphy

Raphy — 'Chook' Sculptural Ceramic, 2025

$1,600
This sculptural ceramic forms part of 'Trees and Animals', a series featuring the works of Victorian based artists Stephen Benwell and Raphy. This exhibition is an exploration of form, using trees and animals as experimental subjects. A series of Benwell’s expressive tree sculptures, capturing a trees strength and presence, are accompanied by a variety of animal sculptures created by Raphy. Together, their works weave a narrative of interdependence between the strong, sturdy and reliable tree and the wild, unpredictable and playful animal.

Raphy is a ceramic artist based in Fitzroy North, Naarm/Melbourne. His work is a colourful and playful juxtaposition of traditional Mediterranean pottery techniques and narratives of the modern Australian experience. His practice has taken him worldwide, including residencies in Sicily and Mexico and exhibitions across Australia.
Raphy has presented solo shows at Bundoora Homestead and exhibited at Craft Victoria, FROCK Gallery in Belgium, and multiple iterations of HARD for Melbourne Design Week. In 2025, he will undertake an Italian Australian Fellowship to study mosaic production, design and restoration in Italy.
