This work forms part of a series by Thannie Phan which moves around the thinness and emptiness of the urban life, alongside the relentless pursuit for the strange economy of the ‘art’.

In the series, stoneware and porcelain vessels are constructed through a meticulous orchestration of coils. Each coil, fine to the point of fragility, is stacked and joined, pinched upward, blending clay molecules into a single structure rather than remaining separate layers. The process spans days, with each vessel starting with a weighted base, anchored by several heavier initial coils, before lighter coils are placed atop slowly, resisting the weight of gravity. Thin layers of diluted glazes are then brushed onto the bisque canvas to preserve the papery texture and weight of the form. Look inside, count the ring marks left on its interior, and you can count the number of coils it takes to build the vessel.

Thannie Phan is a Vietnamese artist potter born in Kien Giang, grew up in Sai Gon & Singapore, lived in Auckland, Gadigal Country (Sydney) and now based in Naarm (Melbourne, Australia). “Gốm Maker” is her ceramic practice, a physical interpretation of the stories she writes about where she is, where she was, and the people surrounding her life. The works are hand-built by pinching coils, using layers of slips, oxides, and glazed by brushing or stamping. The vessels are light, the edges are raw and the palette is restrained.
