Curated by Joseph Gardner

VISIONARIES 2025:
Presenting the future of Australian art, craft and design through the lens of one of the country's most influential creatives.

A stunning suspended light from Melbourne based designer Simone Tops. Made with calf vellum, steel and aniline leather, this work forms part of Simone's ongoing soloist series which explores objects that are a result of the artists material explorations shaped by her intimate technical knowledge of glass, steel and leatherwork.

For artist and maker Simone Tops, materials are not merely passive recipients of form, but active agents in the process of becoming. The objects are a result of the artist's material experimentation which is shaped by an intimate technical knowledge of glass, steel, and leatherwork.

These materials do not have fixed essences, rather they run in a continuum, matter into matter, surface into surface and form into form.  The emergent sculptural and architectural pieces are resultant of a desire to push materials to their outermost limits. The biomorphic forms that emerge from this process are not just a matter of visual resemblance or imitation, but a new form that is changed, as if almost elementally.

In Studio Tops's pieces, the organic and the industrial are not antithetical, but rather two aspects of a shared material reality, constantly entangled and interpenetrating.

Joseph Gardner is the 2025 Visionaries curator – presenting DONE/UNDONE: an exhibition of 50+ artists, and one of Craft’s largest exhibitions to date – featuring artists working across medium, scale and practice, representing exceptional Australian talent.

DONE/UNDONE explores the creative process as a space of constant negotiation – a series of decisions to build, erase, repeat, or let be. It’s about that intuitive moment when a maker chooses to pause, to push further, or to dismantle entirely. These are the choices that define the rhythm of making – choices familiar to artists, designers, and creators across disciplines.

Joseph Gardner is the Style Editor at Vogue Living, with a decade of experience in publishing and styling, and the founder of Sydney-based gallery, Studio Gardner.
