Jodie Fried
Jodie Fried — Sum of Parts, 2025
DONE/UNDONE
Curated by Joseph Gardner
VISIONARIES 2025: Presenting the future of Australian art, craft and design through the lens of one of the country's most influential creatives.
—
'Sum of Parts' a collection of 101 vessels, each hand-thrown in a variety of high fire stoneware using a blend of mixed clays. Through layered glazes and varied firing processes, subtle tonal shifts evoke geological depth and organic variation.
Through extensive experimentation with glazes and a fastidious commitment to repetitive form, her latest body of work especially conceived for Craft Victoria en masse, features vessels of various sizes in deep, earthy, geological tones. More than standalone objects, Fried’s vessels exist as a collective, each with its own distinct personality while remaining intrinsically connected as part of a larger group.
Her work explores the interplay between individuality and community, where the relationships between the forms, surfaces, and structures reflect the complexities of human connection. By bringing a sense of movement and dialogue to her pieces, she allows them to communicate with one another and the viewer in subtle yet powerful ways.
“Each individual vessel is shaped with intention, yet their truest meaning emerges in togetherness — in quiet dialogue with one another. Like us, they grow richer in community; their subtle beauty deepens, their voices weaving into a shared harmony that is more profound than any single piece alone.”

Joseph Gardner is the 2025 Visionaries curator – presenting DONE/UNDONE: an exhibition of 50+ artists, and one of Craft’s largest exhibitions to date – featuring artists working across medium, scale and practice, representing exceptional Australian talent.
DONE/UNDONE explores the creative process as a space of constant negotiation – a series of decisions to build, erase, repeat, or let be. It’s about that intuitive moment when a maker chooses to pause, to push further, or to dismantle entirely. These are the choices that define the rhythm of making – choices familiar to artists, designers, and creators across disciplines.
Joseph Gardner is the Style Editor at Vogue Living, with a decade of experience in publishing and styling, and the founder of Sydney-based gallery, Studio Gardner.
