Georgina Proud — 'Saprophytic Mirror' Ceramic Mirror (2025)
'The Saprophyte Mirror' by Georgina Proud explores materiality through the chemical reactions and transformation of materials that occur during the ceramic making and firing process. Sea glass rocks and seeds are embedded in the clay body burning out and melting during the firing. The reaction of the foreign materials within the relatively stable properties of the original clay structure creates points of volatility and fragility, texture and imperfection. This experimental process is extremely labour intensive with many potential points of failure as the materials are pushed to their limits. The organic form is inspired by natural elements reminiscent of flora, fungi and micro organisms.

Georgina Proud is a ceramic artist who places a focus on materiality, creating experimental ceramic vessels with inclusions of glass and other found materials. Her work investigates how these materials react to the ceramic and firing processes. Sea glass, trachyte and seeds are embedded in the clay body burning out and melting during the firing. The interplay of the introduced materials and the clay creates a unique process of development. The reaction of the foreign materials within the relatively stable properties of the original clay structure creates points of volatility and fragility, texture and imperfection. This exploration of ceramic materiality constantly challenges traditional notions of form and function, opening doors to new artistic possibilities.

Salon Hang brings together eight female and non-binary artists who challenge the traditional role of the frame in Western art. Working across a range of craft practices, each artist has reimagined the frame, not as a boundary, but as a space for experimentation and creative possibility.
As well as somewhere to display paintings, the “salon” was a place where women came together to educate themselves. Salon Hang aims to connect women from various artistic backgrounds, using the frame and craftwork as symbols for collective solidarity.
