Rachelle Austen
Rachelle Austen – 'Superstitio, Fertilita', Sculpture
$500
Superstito "I survive" explores relative materials with relative mass. These solid black and chocolate clay slabs represent the repetitive nature of resilience and perseverance, positive and negative space, all with the acknowledgement that no two outcomes will ever be the same. No material has removed from the original slab, only displaced to ensure the relative weight and mass remains the same. The displacement of material providing the positive and negative. Cause and effect. Solid slab clay formed under pressure and tension. Glazed and fired in oxidation. Side A - Cause Side B - Effect Scarred abstract surfaces symbolising life's varied experiences and their impact.

Rachelle Austen of ‘Tiny Time’ is a a ceramic artist, living and working on her bush block
in the Macedon Ranges on Dja Dja Wurrung country. Rachelle pushes her material to the extremes with the intent of causing cracks and fissures into the delicately thin androbust solid forms, pushing the material before and beyond breaking, a metaphor for the resilience of existence, the fragility of life and most importantly, the beauty that may be found in the broken, and finding acceptance in imperfections. She has a background in Industrial Design, graduating from a Bachelors at Monash University.
