Rachelle Austen

Rachelle Austen – 'Forma Naturalis Vas Circuli, Herba Silva' Vase

$430
One tall slender, recycled clay carved ikebana inspired sculptural vessel with a Triangular side opening lightly glazed to preserve its raw, earthy texture, the piece draws inspiration from the Wombat Herb Forest in the Macedon Ranges, where the artist resides. The form carved to allow easy hand grip and pouring functions for the vessel.

Abstract brush strokes, made with slips and wild clays, sweep across the surface, echoing the natural beauty and irregularities of the native forest. The spontaneous patterns pay homage to mid-century artists of the 1970s, who embraced freedom and spontaneity in their pottery surface decoration. This vessel captures the essence of nature's imperfections as a source of beauty and inspiration.

Rachelle Austen of ‘Tiny Time’ is a a ceramic artist, living and working on her bush block
in the Macedon Ranges on Dja Dja Wurrung country. Rachelle pushes her material to the extremes with the intent of causing cracks and fissures into the delicately thin androbust solid forms, pushing the material before and beyond breaking, a metaphor for the resilience of existence, the fragility of life and most importantly, the beauty that may be found in the broken, and finding acceptance in imperfections. She has a background in Industrial Design, graduating from a Bachelors at Monash University.
