Julienne Lewis
Julienne Lewis — 'Fallout Series #21', Sculptural Vessel
$2,500
‘In such ugly times, the only true protest is beauty.’ Phil Ochs
These hand-built sculptural vessels are a response to the current climate of violence and injustice which diminish us all. Julienne is particularly inspired by the idea that art can serve as a powerful catalyst for change, a notion that deeply resonates in my work as I strive to create pieces that elicit an emotional response from the viewer. These works explore form and texture using carving, layered slips and multiple firings to achieve a fossil-like quality. Traces of iron break through letting in a little warmth, reminding us of hope. Gaps in the forms reflect life's only certainty-impermanence. We are bonded by this reality of impending decay: we live in the fallout.

Julienne Lewis is a ceramic artist whose work has a timeless, fossil-like quality, giving the impression of having been found rather than created. Her art responds powerfully to human experience, aiming to elicit an emotional reaction from the viewer. The hand-built sculptural vessels she creates are surprisingly light, embodying both fragility and strength. Through carving, layered slips and multiple firings, she explores the link between culture and landscape which deeply influences her approach to colour, form and texture. Refining her artistic expression over decades, eventually culminated in formal, life-changing ceramics training at SOCA.
