Juan Castro

Juan Castro — 'Sacrosanto' Candle Holder in Gunmetal

$2,750

The Sacrosanto series is inspired by objects and artefacts from Catholic churches. Little altars where the light of the candle is embraced by rounded curves with a simple and beautiful symmetrical pattern. Castro follows the traditional forms of a candle, mostly narrow and tall or short and broad, to achieve an object that seems to wrap around the candle. The sand casting texture and the semi polished finished of the metal reflect the flame in different levels as the candle burns out, projecting the light of the flame on the different angles and surfaces, as if the flame carries its own Halo.

Juan Castro is a social and cultural anthropologist, who studied at the University of Seville, Spain. Juan moved to Melbourne in 2011 and completed an Advanced Diploma of Jewelry and Object Design at Melbourne Polytechnic in 2016. The connection between anthropology and contemporary jewelry design arose from his final thesis, which focused on adornments and body modification through different cultures and the way in which it develops in contemporary society. His body of work is based on traditional techniques and the inspiration of antique jewelry, all seen from a contemporary point of view.
