Yueyun Chen — 'The Rose' Necklace, 2024

$75
The Secret Garden is a collection of handcrafted couture garments blending crochet with denim, reinterpreting traditional techniques in a contemporary context. The collection embodies elegance and ease, offering versatile designs that adapt to body movement while delivering delightful surprises.

Inspired by 1920s European women’s fashion, the designs prioritise freedom of movement and adaptability for various occasions. Floral patterns are created using the Devoré technique on chambray fabric, while the crochet work explores innovative possibilities by incorporating the Chinese Bao Xiang floral motif into Irish crochet.
By transforming flat patterns into sculptural forms, the collection reimagines traditional crochet within a contemporary fashion context.

Yueyun Chen (Lily) is a Chinese-born designer whose work bridges traditional craftsmanship and modern design. A 2024 graduate of RMIT University’s Bachelor of Fashion (Design) (Honours), Chen specialises in exploring the potential of crochet techniques within the contemporary fashion context. Through her work, Chen seeks to convey women’s resilience through gentle designs and rich cultural meanings through subtle details. Inspired by real flowers and the traditional Chinese Bao Xiang floral motif, her work blends handcrafted textures with classic fabrics like denim, showcasing the artistry of manual techniques.

Chen’s designs also emphasise adaptability and versatility, creating garments that seamlessly transition between occasions. Each piece is a unique interpretation of beauty, reflecting moments of discovery and surprise.
