Scott Elk — 'Dusk and Dust Grief Kantharos' Sculpture, 2024

$3,200
This ceramic funeral urn within trophy like form is part of Scott's latest series Dusk + Dust, an exploration of grief that began with the creation of a soundscape. The series was initiated by the loss of Scott's father and serves as a meditation on grief and the journey through the grieving process.
In this body of work, life is depicted as a landscape we traverse, with color acting as a remnant of that life. Life is movement and colour. The recurring ring motif symbolizes the transition of energy up and out into the ether of the great nothingness. Through these themes of grief, the work also speaks to the beauty, harshness, and vitality of a uniquely Australian landscape. The primary form I use in the ceramics is the funeral urn, sometimes placed within a bronze cast trophy forms inspired by the ancient Greek vessel, the Kantharos. This duality reflects a journey through grief, navigating unfamiliar terrains toward an afterlife, and ultimately finding acceptance and celebration for a life well lived.

Scott Elk is a multidisciplinary artist from Sydney Australia, exploring the world through ceramics and painting, with a strong undercurrent of drawing that runs through his entire creative output. At times this searching veers into printmaking, and sound as he looks for the right expression of an idea. With his formative years spent in visual arts, Scott’s disillusionment with the commercialisation of his creative energy pushed him to make the decision to pursue art full time, wishing to use his powers for good, working on art and projects personally driven, and for causes he believes in. The various mediums Scott uses in his artwork has guided his foray into professional work experience, such as screen printing wallpaper, as well as pursuing tertiary education and teaching ceramics and drawing at some of the world’s leading art schools with the sole intention of expanding his learning as a student to better produce artwork.
