Laila Marie Costa
Laila Marie Costa – 'Crostoli', Neckpiece, 2021
From the drama, banality and absurdity of life, Costa produces jewellery, assemblage, video and performance. Costa collects material from the bountiful urban environment of the privileged, capitalist, consumer driven society. Objects and materials are gleaned from the street, spotted in second-hand shops, collected from household waste and rescued from recycling bins. Meticulously cleaned, sorted and assembled, the flotsam and jetsam, come together with a 'Do It Yourself' approach. Play is crucial, allowing the materiality to infer the form and reveal its mission as related to the human body. With a wry sense of humour, it aspires to motivate dialogue about jewellery and its place in the contemporary arts ecosystem. In parallel, Costa is inspired by her neurodiversity, her Italian heritage, punk rock, social justice issues, cis white female positionally, menopause, art her/story, politics, traditional artisanal skills, environmental issues & various writers.
