BMDO
BMDO — Basel Bench in Shearling, 2025
DONE/UNDONE
Curated by Joseph Gardner
VISIONARIES 2025: Presenting the future of Australian art, craft and design through the lens of one of the country's most influential creatives.
—
A loose system for making benches from whatever is around. Originally designed for a gallery as a place to sit and view other works, it uses a single custom clamp to turn almost any material into seating. The clamp acts as both structure and punctuation, defining the piece while allowing endless variation in length and finish. Each version takes on the character of its material, whether timber, stone or upholstery, while keeping the same stripped-back logic. It is a bench that sits quietly in the room but rewards a closer look. Extra comfy in shearling.

BMDO is the design practice of Fletcher Barns (Melbourne) and James L. Marshall (Los Angeles). With backgrounds in Industrial Design and Fine Art, they work from a conceptual foundation rooted in process and making. Their practice channels the language of contemporary art into furniture, combining handmade gestures, industrial processes, and found objects to keep the work sharp yet spirited.
BMDO’s approach is playful, dark, social and emotional. Recognised internationally, the studio has been listed by Dwell Magazine and Sight Unseen among the world’s leading new design studios.

Joseph Gardner is the 2025 Visionaries curator – presenting DONE/UNDONE: an exhibition of 50+ artists, and one of Craft’s largest exhibitions to date – featuring artists working across medium, scale and practice, representing exceptional Australian talent.
DONE/UNDONE explores the creative process as a space of constant negotiation – a series of decisions to build, erase, repeat, or let be. It’s about that intuitive moment when a maker chooses to pause, to push further, or to dismantle entirely. These are the choices that define the rhythm of making – choices familiar to artists, designers, and creators across disciplines.
Joseph Gardner is the Style Editor at Vogue Living, with a decade of experience in publishing and styling, and the founder of Sydney-based gallery, Studio Gardner.
