Angus Gardner

Angus Gardner — 'Turning Corners (Cover)' Sculptural Ceramic, 2026

$3,400

This sculpture from Paris based Australian artist Angus Gardner holds key moments and stretches of time over the last year in his Paris studio; winter landscapes in Switzerland, changing trees in Parisian gardens, the deep blue of a summer night sky, street lights switching on at 10pm, and the small differences noticed at home on trips back for visas and weddings. A continuation of Angus' longstanding interest in place and spatial experience, these works speak to a search for stability and familiarity in a new city.

Angus Gardner is an artist currently living and working in Paris. His practice engages with the rhythms of making, the landscape and experience of place.
Initial connections are always established through drawing outside of the studio. These drawings carry an immediacy and freedom that dictates the development of the work that follows. Movement between materials and making techniques is central to Gardner's practice, with a constant push and pull between surface and form. Works develop througha process of iteration, repetition and transition.

For the past year Gardner has been working from his Paris based studio. It has seen areturn to ceramics as the primary material through which he communicates, rather than a translation of ideas first worked out on canvas. Recurring motifs from the landscape become a way to experiment with form and surface, and a record of slow, considered looking. Time, pace and rhythm play an important role in new sculptures. Not only due to the nature of the material, one that requires patience through its many stages, but also in the way the sculptures portray moments of change in the natural world.
