Casey Chong — 'Tea-Drenched Vessels: 04 Tea Pitcher' with Blue Dots
A new series of work deriving from Chong's ‘01 Pop Pop’ cups, exploring different forms and spouts extending from one silhouette, with a delicate wall thickness and lightness in weight. Exciting new addition to ‘Tea-Drenched Vessels’ series. Similar to many of Chong's works, this work started as a little accidental attempt. The form of the tea pitcher actually started as a vase (‘Pop Pop’, 2021). It was originally casted in resin, with the cut out section created with a blown balloon. However, it didn’t quite function well as a vase. Then, when Chong started ceramics making, she made some moulds, had a couple failed attempts, successfully made a couple cups, while demoulding sometimes was still unsuccessful and the cast became out of shape. Then one day, the deformed ones become the spouted ones, the now '04 Tea Pitcher'.
茶海 (tea pitcher), pronounced as ‘cha-hoi’, literally translated as ‘tea’-‘sea’ in English. Used as a vessel for storing tea once brewed, and most notably, for sharing the same tasting experience when there are multiple tea drinkers, allowing the flavours of the tea to be evenly dispersed, with that said, it is also common for people to call it a ‘fair jug’ (公道杯).
The piece is crafted by slipcasting while the form was manipulated at the pre-set stage and stamped with Chong's marking.
