Bolaji Teniola

Bolaji Teniola – 'Athos', 2023

$800

Bolaji Teniola presents the Athos lamp for Everyone's Heard of a Dragon, which takes the form of pipe and plumbing fittings influenced by the industrial atmosphere of the iconic malthouse silos. Expanding on his award-winning Timber Shaving Vessels, Teniola explores further material impropriety melding the visually ephemeral with the decorative,  developinga sculptural silhouette that expands and contracts with time, as is the nature of timber, shifting the contours of the lamp and embodying the visual decay and beauty of the industrial overtones of the silos.

Athos' voluminous form breathes new life into an otherwise discarded waste material and looks at the robustness timber shavings can create. The highly textural, layered composition of Athos, comprised of American Black Walnut, is enhanced further when illuminated, offering invitingly warm tones that showcase the natural grain and hue of the hand-planed timber shavings.

Bolaji Teniola is an emerging interdisciplinary designer, blending his furniture and industrial design knowledge to develop pieces that occupy known genres or something new entirely. In search of pragmatic solutions, Teniola finds joy in allowing the process to dictate the result. Utilising an investigative approach to traverse various mediums, a deep curiosity for materiality and the manufacturing process sits at the centre of Teniola's practice. With an Associate Degree in Furniture Design and a Bachelor of Industrial Design from RMIT University, Teniola also draws on his experience working for design studios locally and abroad. Teniola's works have been showcased in various group exhibitions and have garnered several awards.
