Vicki Mason
Vicki Mason — 'Dark Grey Winter Wattle' Brooch
Collected by major institutions such as the Powerhouse NSW, the Art Gallery of NSW, shown in important exhibitions such as Melbourne Now at the NGV in 2014 and a host of other prestigious institutions, Vicki Mason’s practice is one of narrative driven imagery and generous contribution, via her position as a teacher.
Diverse material choices, incorporating plastics and synthetic materials hand in hand with refined gold smithing techniques, arise in part from Vicki’s pursuit of bright colours to feature in her work, but is also linked to her desire to challenge notions of preciousness and her conviction that jewellery can be a portable tool for communication.
Beginning her studies in Dundedin, at the Otago Polytechnic School of Art, majoring in classical art and architecture, Vicki’s art jewellery practice gravitated to working with natural imagery, where she has developed a visual language that interrogates notions of place, belonging and life cycle. Awarded the Australia Council Arts Barcelona Studio Residency in 2015, amongst many other international opportunities, Vicki continuously extends upon her own practice.
