Stephen Benwell — 'Trunks #25' Sculptural Ceramic, 2025

$2,000
This sculptural ceramic forms part of 'Trees and Animals', a series featuring the works of Victorian based artists Stephen Benwell and Raphy. This exhibition is an exploration of form, using trees and animals as experimental subjects. A series of Benwell’s expressive tree sculptures, capturing a trees strength and presence, are accompanied by a variety of animal sculptures created by Raphy. Together, their works weave a narrative of interdependence between the strong, sturdy and reliable tree and the wild, unpredictable and playful animal.

Benwell received a Diploma of Art from the VCA in 1974, a Diploma of Education from Melbourne State College in 1976 and he received an MFA from Monash University in 2005. The artist undertook a residency at the Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris in 1984–1985. He was honoured with a retrospective of his work at Heide Museum of Modern Art in 2013.
