Ross Thompson — 'Ray's Cabinet', 2024

This cabinet tells the story of the spiritual relationship of my Grandpa and me. He passed away suddenly when I was two, but his shed became a place of curiosity for me as I grew older - it remained as if he had just put his tools down to finish for the day.

I can recall the smell and the layout of the shed to this day, and remember he sense of discovery when I would spend time exploring when visiting my Grandma as a child and young man. Amongst it all were some lengths of Myrtle with gun stocks traced out on them, pieces which I have kept and still have, waiting for a special project for my family.

I still use the tools that my Grandma let me have, all of which I hope to pass onto my children or grandchildren so they can share in my, and his, incredibly wonderful life. This cabinet tells the story of our relationship, and of fining a place of belonging and inspiration to continue life's great story.
