Ash Allen – 'Arkle' Table Lamp, 2025

"Borrowing the classic form of a soft, ornate table light, with all the frilly trimmings and pull cord, I made this piece out of cold, square steel mesh, hoping it might resonate in a way Tron might crash into Downton Abbey". A discrete, low wattage, long-lasting LED strip light in the "gimp" braid at the top, is activated by the pull cord, to light up the meshwork below, nickel-plated to ensure maximum sparkle.

Ash Allen is a multi-award winning, Melbourne-based furniture designer. A mechanical engineer by trade, he enjoys making original furniture pieces which have a strong narrative and minimal environmental footprint.

Allen recently exhibited a solo presentation at the Melbourne Design Fair, 2023.
