Hilary Green – 'Meringue Muse', 2023

Meringue Muse explores the sensory delight and tangible tasting of a sculpted meringue. My childhood fascination with sugary substances is now imbued with the weight of rococo ideals. My recent trip to Italy forced me to question the role of the three muses over time. I spotted them on ballroom ceilings, rococo furniture and mosaic floors. A problematic and ancient portrayal of women as mystic guides for men. My attraction to meringues, rococo design and myths all seem confuse me now as I try to make sense of my values in an imagined world of opulence and excess.

Stoneware urn with hand sculpted pigmented clay pattern around the outside with details of three muse figures joined by ribbon. Textured like meringue with finger prints. Glazed internally and water tight with a whipped meringue like white, silky glaze.

Hilary Green is a ceramic artist and painter based in Melbourne. Her sculptures are inspired by the sea, shell fragments found on the sand as well as the shapes and shadows of rocks. In her work, she explores organic forms and imperfection through her drawing practice and translates them into surreal stoneware sculptures.

Hilary is especially interested in the tactility of clay and how she can create the sense of fluidity and movement, leaving imprints of the hand in its hardened state. Her sculptural forms manifest mystical ancient shapes mixed with modern colours, playful positions and textures, whilst remaining functional to represent timeless domesticity.
