Chela Edmunds is the talented maker behind Takeawei ceramics, a line of beautiful and useful objects in clay. Chela, originally from Queensland, received a BA in textile design from RMIT in 2007 before moving to New York to work as a fashion textile designer for DKNY and Vera Wang brands. Fuelled by a desire to get back to nature and a more organic form of design, Chela started making ceramics in 2011. She returned to Melbourne in 2012 to concentrate on making and return to the landscape that inspires her.
Chela both makes and teaches from her picturesque studio in Torquay, on the Surf Coast of Victoria in Australia.
The tableware is made from high-fired stone ware, using food safe glazes and fired to a very hot 1280 degrees Celsius. All Takeawei tableware is microwave and dishwasher safe.
Chela has appeared in numerous online and magazine publications including Gallery Magazine, Design Files, Sight Unseen, Australian Ceramics Journal and Rented Space. Group exhibitions and collaborations include Dress Up - Namaste 2015 at Craft Victoria,1-OK Club, NGV, The Victorian Craft Awards, Finalist 2016 and Out of the Studio - Surf Coast Arts 2017. Chela’s ceramics also frequently appear in lifestyle editorial on blogs and in magazines.
