For nearly fifteen years, recognising the value of repetition to refine her craft, Sophie Moran (formerly Milne) has produced ranges of ceramic wares that have sold in galleries and retail outlets throughout Australia. Predominantly utilising the potter’s wheel and merging traditional and modern techniques of pottery production, she produces delicate porcelain forms which have become a language to explore ideas. Balancing on the fine line between the perceived fields of functional, conceptual and ornamental ceramics is a challenge that fascinates this artist. Sophie works from a private studio in Fitzroy North, Melbourne. Integral to her art practise is her involvement in teaching wheel thrown ceramic courses at Northcote Pottery Supplies and private classes in her own studio.
The Quarry Collection is comprised of functional stoneware objects that have been designed to work flexibly within contemporary home life. Made from high fired stoneware, these pieces feature a subtle flecked, matte glaze and a rich earthy palette.
Materials: high fired stoneware with flecked, matte glaze.
Dimensions: height 13cm, diameter 13cm, width 20cm x 15.5cm.
Care instructions: "The Quarry glazes are matt as a result of microscopic pits and bumps on the surface that scatter reflected light. The surface is food safe but has a tendency to slowly stain and mark over time. A piece may be gently scrubbed or soaked in a mixture of baking soda and water to lessen the effect but the artist's intent is that this slow transition be enjoyed, allowing the piece to change over time, aging with the household and acquiring the patina of a life of use"
