Shimara Carlow - Silver and 18CT Gold Acorn Cup Rings Trio

Shimara Carlow

Jeweller Shimara Carlow was born in a remote coastal area in West Cork, Southern Ireland in 1979. A childhood fascination for collecting shells, stones, feathers and seed pods found along the seashore has been the inspiration for her work.

Completing a degree in Silversmithing and Jewellery in 2001, she went on to a 2-year residency at Bishopsland Workshops in South Oxfordshire In 2004 Shimara moved to London where she set up her own business and workshop, and in 2008 she relocated to Melbourne Australia.

Shimara's jewellery has been inspired by natural forms, primarily seed pods. She uses silver, 18ct gold, silk paper and gum nuts to create her tactile jewellery. Collections include Gum Nut, neckpieces, rings and earrings constructed from both silver and real gum nuts and Honesty, whitened and reticulated silver ovals, which resemble honesty leaves, constructed in long articulated neckpieces and bracelets.

Craft Victoria has shown Shimara’s work for many years, and her graceful, timeless designs are beautiful to look at and impeccably made. Featuring layering and detailing that patinates with time, revealing a life with the wearer, Shimara’s pieces are perfect markers for special occasions and treasures for life.

Left to oxidise with time, her pieces gather depth and oxidisation that evolves beautifully, or they can be cleaned with bi-carbonate of soda, water and a toothbrush, to maintain the bright sheen of un-oxidised sterling silver and gold.
